During pregnancy, the extra hormones and blood volume in your body may cause your gums to swell and bleed.  Floss and brush regularly, using a soft toothbrush, to keep your teeth in good shape.

Increased saliva is normal in the first trimester.  Gum or hard candy, mouthwash, and avoiding starches may help.

Dental checkups are a good idea during pregnancy and the second trimester is a good time to be sure your mouth is healthy.  Local anesthesia, if needed does not pose a risk during pregnancy.  Dental x-rays should only be done if necessary and with your abdomen shielded well.
