A healthy diet with lean meats, fruits, and vegetables is important during pregnancy for you and your growing baby. It is important to drink at least 8 glasses of water each day. Protein-rich foods are important because they are the "building blocks" for the baby. There is however, a few foods to avoid during pregnancy. These include:
- Raw and undercooked fish, such as sushi, meats, and poultry
- Hot dogs should be cooked, not cold
- Deli meats should be purchased in the package and heated in the microwave
- No shark, swordfish, king mackerel, or tilefish
- Limit Albacore tuna to 1 serving per week
- Limit regular tuna to 2 servings per week
- Avoid un-pasteurized juices and milk
- Avoid soft cheeses such as brie, feta, Bleu cheese
- Limit caffeine to 2 to 3 servings per day
It is Okay to indulge a bit if you have a food craving as long as your food choices are not harmful. If you eat anything that is not considered food such as dirt to starch, let your provider know because you may need some additional vitamins.
