Your First Visit
Congratulations on your new pregnancy!
Your first visit to our office will be for an ultrasound to verify the dating of your pregnancy. You will also have an appointment with one of our providers after your ultrasound on the same day to discuss your results.
Your ultrasound visit will be scheduled when you are at least 7 weeks pregnant. It is not necessary to be seen any earlier in pregnancy unless you are experiencing a medical problem. If you have had a high-risk pregnancy in the past, please call the office to speak with a nurse who will have your medical history evaluated by one of our physicians. The physician will then determine if you need to be seen sooner.
When you meet with the provider after your ultrasound, they will discuss the results of the ultrasound with you and answer any questions you have. They will review your medications to ensure they are safe for you to continue and will review your medical history.
After reviewing your medical history, if you have certain medical conditions, the provider may recommend that you be referred to a specialist or tertiary care center (such as UNC, ECU, Duke, etc.) for co-management of your pregnancy or, in some cases, a complete transfer of care. These conditions may include, but are not limited to, obesity, poorly controlled diabetes mellitus, poorly controlled chronic high blood pressure, complicated heart conditions, complex autoimmune disorders, or a history of two previous C-sections with a desire for a vaginal birth (VBAC). Please note, this list does not include all conditions that may need a referral. While we understand that traveling out of town can be inconvenient, our top priority is ensuring you receive the specialized care needed for your condition. A referral doesn’t necessarily mean you won’t return to us for care; however, in certain situations, a full transfer to another facility may be recommended.
After your ultrasound visit, your next visit will be with our Perinatal Nurse for the OB Intake Visit.
We know this can be an exciting yet sometimes overwhelming time, and you may have many questions. Our goal is to make your prenatal care as smooth and fulfilling as possible. If you have any questions, please don't hesitate to call our office.
